Ford Leadership Program Hits the Road

After a two-day train the trainer session in Roseburg, Oregon , led by Vicki Luther, the staff of
trainers for the Ford Family Foundation Community Leadership program began the delivery of the 60-hour curriculum. The train the trainer session focused on the materials developed by a team led by the Heartland Center co-director. A review of adult education principles, audience analysis and trainer skills were all included in the session. The group also discussed the curriculum activities and resource papers.

The first training session was scheduled for the following week and to date, three communities have begun the program, and evaluations have been excellent. A second train the trainers session took place early in March in Portland. At that time, the trainers had a chance to share field experiences and do some problem solving in certain areas. Vicki Luther is also in contact with the trainers by telephone and e-mail in a coaching role as they use the curriculum. These trainers are all part of Rural Development Initiatives, Inc., an Oregon based non-profit.

The Ford Institute for Community Building, a program of the Ford Family Foundation, developed this program to nurture local leaders in Oregon’s small towns and rural communities. The target audience is existing and emerging community leaders. Over a three-year period, the program will engage 360 citizens in twenty rural communities. After the initial pilot test this year and revision as needed, the Foundation will make a decision on distribution of the materials to a wider audience.
