Rural-Urban
Update:
The Nebraska
Rural Development Commission recently recognized the Heartland Center
program, Strengthening the Rural-Urban Connection, with its
´Outstanding 100 Rural Development Initiative in 2000
award. This national program is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation
and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. This summer, Rural-Urban
Connection youth development projects are taking shape in the Southeast.
In Georgia planning
through the 4-H Foundation is underway for a September Youth Summit
and a subsequent unity tour to further bridge the rural-urban gap.
In Selma, Alabama,
the Black Belt Human Resource & Development Center is collaborating
with the Wilcox County School Board, PTO and other organizations
to provide conflict resolution workshops to prevent school violence.
And in Florida
the 4-H Foundation is assisting the Everglades Community Association
in providing computer access and instruction to children of migrant
farmers, as well as community development training for association
staff.
